Photographing Namibia’s Starry Skies: Part 2

Written by Daryll Williams

Namibia’s night sky lends itself incredibly well to photography (read astrophotography part 1). Every year, countless photographers, whether amateurs or professionals, travel from all over the world to this southern African country to capture astonishing images of the universe.

Celestial sights aplenty

The great thing about visiting Namibia is that you can always find someone willing to take you on a guided tour of its attractions. And the night sky is no different. There are several tour operators around the country that offer guided stargazing tours.

The local guides are knowledgeable and passionate about the stars that shine down on the country and they are always more than willing to share their stories with visitors from near and far.

How to experience it

If anyone needs another reason to visit Namibia’s iconic Sossusvlei, here it is: The stargazing opportunities are simply incredible. The sky is always clear and there is almost no light pollution out in the desert near the vlei.

Here, Sossusvlei Lodge was once ranked among the top 12 stargazing hotels in the world by CNN Travel, and Sossusvlei Desert Lodge offers a tranquil, scenic escape under the night sky.

However, no matter where you find yourself in the country, the night sky is always beautiful, and if you are visiting Africa from the northern hemisphere then you should not miss out on this opportunity to see a totally different set of stars on the other end of the world.
