Bárbara Reviews: Pineapple House

Found along Cape Town’s iconic Atlantic Seaboard, with spectacular views of Lions Head and within walking distance of the renowned Sea Point Promenade, Pineapple House immediately conjures fantasies of sipping Mai Tais on a beach in Hawaii. However, this hotel dressed in African aesthetics carries a particularly Capetonian appeal.

As it is, pineapples (according to the owners of this quirky pink-painted boutique hotel) are synonymous with leisure and luxury. So, it made perfect sense to name their stylish Sea Point spot after the yellow-hued fruit. Combined with the eccentric fabrics, enormous artworks, and delightfully modern, luxurious amenities, my time here made a fruity stay worth remembering.

Location

Besides being near Sea Point’s finest highlights, this lovely property is also a 5-minute drive from the V&A Waterfront, 10 minutes from Table Mountain, and just around the corner from the world-famous Camps Bay Beach.

Activities

Found a couple of metres adjacent to Sea Point’s bustling Main Road, Pineapple House is the perfect place for locals and tourists. Almost directly across the street you’ll find some of Cape Town’s favourites: the iconic Mojo Market if you’re on the lookout for a vibe, Jarryd’s Eatery for breakfast, Kleinsky’s for some world-class bagels, Coco Safar for award-winning croissants, and the stunning Sea Point Promenade for the best evening walk you could ask for.

If you’re not out and about exploring, Pineapple House is the perfect place to put your feet up and relax. A unique home-style kitchen marks the centre of the common area, where daily breakfast and all-day drinks are on offer – featuring local and artisanal ingredients.

Rooms

This little oasis boasts 9 beautifully appointed bedrooms, all filled with local art and bold fabrics, creating a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. Each suite has its own specific style, while the communal areas creatively use space and colour to create a special holiday feeling. The rooms are furnished with king-sized beds, have en-suite bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi. There is a quaint, attic room on the top floor which isn’t advisable for adults as the inclined ceilings increase the likelihood of bumping one's head, but it can make for a little refuge for kids if a family is looking to book a stay. A splash pool also makes for the perfect cool-off following a typically scorching Cape Town summer day.

Food

The hotel offers a high-quality complimentary breakfast with fresh local products, which is served in the dining room each morning. However, there are several good restaurants in the area to choose from for lunch or dinner. As a vegetarian, my only wish would be adding plant-based milk alternatives to their offering.

Sustainability

Pineapple House invests energy into being a green and eco-conscious hotel, using intelligent lighting and solar panels to reduce electrical usage and occasional bout of load shedding. The hotel also works with 4 incredible non-profit organisations: Project Playground, the H18 Foundation, The Jafuta Foundation, and Overstrand Hospice. In partnership with the organisations, funds are raised to support vulnerable children, train under-skilled women, contribute to wildlife conservation, and fund palliative care, among others.

My highlights

  • The location is highly central, making it very easy to get around.

  • The stunning interiors make for a novel and refreshing  stay.

  • The food is always freshly prepared, just the way you want it.

Is it for you?

If you’re after a comfortable, luxurious stay close to Cape Town’s hottest spots, this is definitely the place for you. It doesn’t hurt that the hotel is lovely to look at either. With Viatu, you can make this dream destination a reality by starting to plan your trip today.
