Lena Reviews: Villa Margherita

Written by Lena Melcher

Following our stopover in Sossusvlei, we were very excited to embark on the long drive straight to Swakopmund. After arriving, we were warmly welcomed by the lush, green oasis that formed the centrepiece of the 3rd stop on our Namibia trip: Villa Margherita.

With a penchant for art and old-world artifacts, Villa Margherita offers an eclectic mix of old-world charm and afro-chic appeal in the heart of Swakopmund. However, the attentive and personal service is the real appeal. There’s also an organic bistro (open all day), laundry service, and professional massages for those in need of some pampering after a day of exploring or driving (like us!).

Location

This boutique beauty is conveniently located in Swakopmund, within walking distance of the beach, the famous Tug restaurant, and some of the best german bakeries in town. The building carries the unique charm of an old colonial house and includes all necessary modern conveniences.

Activities

Swakopmund is a city full of activities. Skydiving, sand-boarding or quad-biking through the dunes are all on the cards. Unfortunately, we were only there for 1 night, leaving us just about enough time to go for a stroll through the town and have dinner along the coast – a lovely contrast to the heat of the desert. In hindsight, I would highly recommend a 2-night minimum stay.

Rooms

The owner has revamped the original building into an intimate guesthouse full of art. Many of Villa Margherita's original features remain, but these now serve as a backdrop to the eclectic mix of sculptures, masks, and photography present throughout. The 8 rooms all carry this design ethos but maintain a spacious and elegant appeal. Overall, it’s a great value-for-money option.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, but it’s not the most reliable.

Food

Villa Margherita’s small and cosy eatery offers delicious meals and an excellent selection of wine and liquor. We had breakfast there and the hosts personalised our meal exactly the way we wanted it. It’s also suitable for vegetarians!

Sustainability

Villa Margherita supports the Mondesa Youth Opportunities Trust (MYO). The nonprofit aims to educate children in the poorer communities of Swakopmund to become future leaders. You can donate and visit the township during your stay. The staff will be happy to organise it.

My highlights

  • Professional, in-house massage studio

  • The whimsical courtyard garden

  • Centrally located – you’ll be within walking distance of all the highlights

Is it for you?

If you want a charming, comfortable and delightful place to call home for a night or 2 (or 3 or 4), along with world-class, helpful staff, this is the place for you.
