“There are benefits to be reaped from protecting natural resources”

Treats

The Coral Triangle in Indonesia is one of the most diverse places on the planet, but destructive fishing practices and illegal poaching are threatening it. This 10-minute short film by The Economist explores how one resort is trying to protect this endangered area by working with the local community. The Misool Marine Reserve comprises 2 No-Take Zones (NTZ) which protects one of the richest coral reefs on earth. This project is all funded through a luxury resort on one of the islands and is a great illustration of how tourism can contribute to sustainability.

Takeaways

In light of the recent Seaspiracy craze, it’s inspiring to see how some businesses and individuals within the tourism industry are trying to make a difference. This positive story is a nice change from the doom and gloom of recent news about the future of our oceans. It shows how actively supporting conservation and social programs can really make a difference when travelling.

2. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

One of the most inspiring true stories in human history

Treats

If you don’t know much about South African history, this movie will give you some insight into the man who changed the country’s history forever - Nelson Mandela. In the face of separatist apartheid, Mandela overcomes society’s differences by relying on an African proverb about strength in unity. Follow his journey from boyhood to the presidency in this heart-wrenching drama, based on his life.

Takeaways

Based on the real events that occurred in Mandela’s life, the movie captures his inspiring character and perseverance with an excellent lead performance from Idris Elba. Aside from brushing up on South African history, you’ll be left with a feeling of gladness that a once divided nation came together through compassionate leadership. You’ll also be left feeling curious to see South Africa today, many years after Mandela’s time in office.

3. Gorillas in the Mist

“When you realize the value of all life, you dwell on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future.”

Treats

Gorillas in the Mist tells the true story of American wildlife expert Dian Fossey, who is played by Sigourney Weaver. Fossey was working as an occupational therapist in the US before she went to Rwanda to study African mountain gorillas. She developed a unique bond with the animals and fought to protect them from poachers. Her groundbreaking research and anti-poaching work helped to save gorillas from extinction.

Takeaways

The film will give you insight into the threat that gorillas face from poaching and trophy hunting. Although Fossey’s conservation work helped to protect these animals from extinction, they still face numerous threats today, including habitat destruction and human violence. Gorillas in the Mist will leave you feeling inspired by Fossey’s lifelong devotion to the study of these beautiful animals.

With June’s edition of Netflix & Change, we wanted to inspire you to travel more sustainably, boost your knowledge in South African history and pay homage to the brave people protecting the gorillas in Rwanda. At Viatu, we are dedicated to keeping wild places wild, and honouring the people who put their lives on the line for peace.
