September’s binge: Birders

“I think what really inspires us most about birds is their freedom”

Directed by Otilia Portillo Padua, Birders is a short yet impactful documentary about birders from the United States of America and Mexico who navigate, narrate and advocate for the conservation and preservation of the Rio Grande delta, which forms part of a river they explain to be the most important migratory corridor in North America. The opening visuals of the documentary introduce you to the ever-vast water bodies and lush reserves of deep state Texas. Birders of all ages, entrepreneurs, researchers, nature photographers and conservationists give impactful insights on their experiences, motivations and the need for wildlife preservation, specifically within this migration hotspot. Divided into two chapters - the USA and Mexico - we are given context to what it actually means to be a birder on both sides of the border.

The sustainability factor

Overall: 3/5

In under 40 minutes, Birders highlights the level of impact nature and its precious creatures can have on us all. The film not only educates you on the need for habitat conservation for the survival of migratory birds, but you are also given a glimpse into the personal and social lives of birders. A passion for environmentalism pours out of the screen from the genuine interactions that occur throughout the documentary. It is the human notions of joy, fascination, empathy, drive and heartfelt advocacy for the lives and habitats of birds that make this film a must-watch for all.

The Viatu review

Themes:

Birders highlights the power of passion. Each and every participant in the documentary either shares a passion for birds, wildlife conservation, or the environment. It is this very passion that fuels their advocacy. They have all become voices for a collective effort in preserving this migratory corridor, not just for future generations but for the hundreds of bird species that depend on the passage for food, water and shelter during periods of migration. This documentary is a great example of the significant impact a passion can have. It not only encourages young people who are eager to see change but also those who have been disheartened by the ways of the world, showing the viewers that your actions, big or small, are influential and can make a remarkable difference.

Production:

Panning from one lush green reserve to another, to the cool wetlands in the Rio Grande delta, Birders was filmed to highlight just how much birdlife and habitat potential lies within this North American corridor. With the main focus centred on passion, preservation and protection, you are given wide panoramic shots of wetlands, lush green tree tops, twilight-lit backdrops, and majestic birds as well as the advocacy of passionate environmentalists. Depending on the scene, viewers can expect backing soundtracks of whistles and chirps coming from birds perched on tree tops in forests, or North American country music making reference to Texas, and Mexican rhythmic sounds that speak of the beautiful birds of the country and the promise of rich agriculture in the hills of Mexico.

What makes it different:

The impact of this short documentary lies in the quiet advocacy of the film's participants. You are given great detail of the harm faced by habitat loss, but without a doubt, what will remain is the numerous lives that have been positively impacted by their love for birds. From experts to novice birders, viewers are offered a unique chance to see how a passion for birdlife and one's own environment can bring joy and great fulfilment to their life.

September’s Netflix & Change is all about embracing your passions while advocating for the environment. Yes, nature is resilient but in the fast-paced and polluting world we live in, resilience can not be promised. Let this month’s Netflix & Change selection encourage you to embrace your passions and make a positive impact on the environment while enjoying them.
