It is recommended to spend at least 5 days and optimally 10 days in Rwanda to fully explore its natural beauty and culture. This allows enough time for gorilla trekking, visiting the national parks, and experiencing the local culture and cuisine.
Is there malaria in Rwanda? 🦟
Yes, malaria is present in Rwanda, especially during the rainy season. Travellers are advised to take anti-malarial medication, wear long sleeves, socks and trousers at dusk, and use insect repellent to reduce the risk of contracting malaria. Visit your doctor 1 month before you travel to find out what medication you should consider taking and learn about other specific signs and symptoms of malaria.

It is advisable to make sure that all the child’s documents are up to date, including any vaccination cards. If you are travelling with a child who is not yours, it is always a good idea to get an affidavit from both parents giving explicit permission for the child to travel with you. Always keep any copies of relevant documents and spare passport photos on hand.
What health certifications do I need to enter Rwanda? 💉
All travellers to Rwanda are required to have a yellow fever vaccination certificate if they have been in a yellow fever-endemic country within the previous six days. You should consult with your doctor before travelling to make sure you are up to date on all necessary vaccinations and medications.
Is my driver's licence valid in Rwanda? 📋
Foreign driver's licences are accepted in Rwanda, but if you plan to drive yourself, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP). You can obtain an IDP from your local automobile association before travelling.

Yes, travel insurance is always a good idea when travelling to remote locations. Rwanda requires all travellers to have health insurance and it is highly recommended that you also get travel insurance on your trip.

- Rwandans are friendly and welcoming, so it is essential to show appreciation by being polite and considerate.
- Dressing modestly is also crucial, especially when visiting places of cultural significance or public spaces.

What currency do they use in Rwanda? 💵
The official currency of Rwanda is the Rwandan Franc (RWF), which is divided into 100 centimes. The best places to exchange foreign currency are banks, which can be found in major cities and towns. Also, avoid driving near the Congo Border if possible due to civil unrest and resulting raiding parties.
What should I keep in mind if I am involved in a car accident? 💥
The best way to prevent an accident is to follow the rules of the road: do not drive at night, under the influence or over the speed limit. I do not have a driver's licence. Can I still get around easily in Rwanda? 🚌
Public transportation is readily available in Rwanda, including buses, taxis, and motorcycle taxis. Buses are the most affordable way to travel, but they are often overcrowded and slow. Taxis and motos are more expensive, but they are faster and more convenient. It is advisable to negotiate the fare before boarding a taxi. However, one of the best options is to organise a private vehicle with a driver at your accommodation, a car rental service or through Rent a Driver Rwanda, which can usually cost about USD $50 per day.
What condition are the roads in? 🛣️
The main roads in Rwanda are generally in good condition, but the rural roads can be rough, especially during the rainy season. The condition of the roads is improving with the government investing heavily in upgrading the road network. It is advisable to check the road conditions with local authorities or your travel agent before embarking on a road trip.
What happens if I get a flat tyre? 🚨
In the case of a flat tyre, it is essential to have a spare tyre, jack, and tyre-changing tools in the vehicle. If you are unsure how to change a tyre, you can ask for assistance from a nearby garage or a local. It is also advisable to carry a spare tyre repair kit, especially when travelling in remote areas.

Will I ever come face to face with wild animals? 🦁
Thanks to the country's extensive conservation efforts, Rwanda has a thriving wildlife population. It is possible that you may encounter wild animals such as gorillas and monkeys in national parks and forests. It is important to remember that these are wild animals and can be dangerous. Always follow the rules and regulations set out by the park rangers and your guides. During gorilla treks, keep your distance and never touch the gorillas, as they can easily catch human illnesses. Only use designated picnic areas and remember to keep your windows closed when you leave your accommodation to prevent monkeys from entering. On a safari, always listen to your expert guide and tracker, who are experienced in these situations and will keep you safe.
Is there cell phone reception in Rwanda? 📶
Yes, there is cellular reception in Rwanda. However, in some remote areas, there may be no signal. If you are travelling through remote areas, please make sure you notify us, your family, or members of the accommodation where you are staying and let them know of your route and ETA.
How to get your cell phone connected to a local network? 📲
Yes, it is very easy. You can buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card at the airport, any cellular store, or a grocery store. We recommend sticking to MTN as it has the best coverage. You can buy a local SIM card, for about RWF 500 (0.41 Euros approximately) with a free bonus of RWF 400 or 500 MBs.
Is internet connection widely available and reliable? 🌐
This depends on where you are staying. In urban areas, most restaurants, cafes and stays will have WiFi access, however, it may have a capped limit. Overall, most accommodations will offer Wi-Fi connection.
Do I need to draw cash or is a credit or debit card enough? 💳
Most places in Rwanda have card facilities, so it is not necessary to travel with large amounts of cash. We do advise having small denominations and coins for tipping purposes and an emergency fund of about RWF 50,000 (about 40 Euros) on long trips. In more remote areas, there may not be card machines available.
Do I need a power plug travel adapter? 🔌
Rwanda mostly uses type C and J plugs. Type C plugs are the most common, but we recommend carrying a universal adapter just in case.
Can I make changes to my itinerary while travelling? 📝
Although we love spontaneity, not all lodges and camps are the same. We will try our best to make any itinerary changes, but it can come down to the T&Cs of the specific accommodation provider and may result in possible cancellation or administrative charges. Is healthcare in Rwanda good? 🏥
Rwanda has a good healthcare system, with many hospitals and clinics located in urban areas, particularly Kigali. Pharmacies that are dotted around the country also often have very helpful medical professionals to assist with minor injuries or illnesses.
Who covers the cost of a medical emergency? 💵
If you have taken out comprehensive travel insurance, your insurer will cover the costs for usual medical treatment. Check the details of your insurance before you leave and if faced with an emergency while travelling.
Is healthcare in Rwanda good? 🏥
Rwanda has some great healthcare facilities such as hospitals and clinics in Kigali. In necessary cases, there is the option to air evacuate a patient to nearby Kenya.
Will I be able to find a doctor and hospital? ⚕️

Do I need to present a Covid-19 negative test result at customs? 😷

What happens if I get Covid-19 whilst on my trip? 🚨
If you suspect that you might have Covid-19, don’t panic. Isolate yourself and seek medical attention if you are unwell. Check what the Covid-19 procedure is at your camp, lodge, or guesthouse and follow their guidelines.
