I embarked on my road trip through South Africa’s Garden Route, open to its wonders, and soon enough, I found myself in the thick of the forest. It was then not by chance but excellent guidance that I went to stay at the unique and exclusive Tsala Treetop Lodge. From the get-go, it is clear that this amazing setting boasts everything from friendly, attentive staff to luxury decor and amenities. However, without question, my true enchantment still lies with the age-old indigenous forest it is set in and how the lodge blends in perfectly.
Location
Ideal for a picture-perfect getaway, Tsala is situated in a lush forest between the coastal towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. You will find yourself outside of town, a mere 15-minute drive from Plettenberg Bay, and in the perfect location to delight in popular Garden Route activities. The area’s views are astonishing— on the rainy days, the surroundings had a special mist to it, and as it cleared up towards the evening, I was blessed with a breathtaking sunset.
Activities
Among the many experiences available at Tsala, having a peaceful swim in a small terrace pool under the treetops is one of the most memorable for me. Because it had been raining, the usual long-tailed visitors didn’t show up, but guests would typically see them amusing themselves and others with all kinds of vervet monkey business. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to walk around the neighbouring gardens that are green and lush and feature a variety of lovely flowers. These beautiful gardens are taken care of by the skilled hands of the mother of Ian Hunter, CEO of Hunter Hotels.
Rooms
During my stay, I found the true relaxation and tranquillity I had heard so much about. Upon entering my room, I experienced the childlike excitement of going into a treehouse. Still, I felt the freedom and ease of a luxurious, spacious area fit for an adult ready to recharge. I was also delighted to find a refreshing fruit platter and a chilled bottle of bubbly waiting for me in my room! It gets pretty chilly in the evenings, even on some summer nights, so the staff turned on the fireplace to keep me cosy. I stayed in one of the luxury suites hidden in the forest canopy, but there are also secluded villas with 2 bedrooms. There is free wifi throughout the lodge.
Food
I loved how the restaurant’s staff were accommodating and attentive to details. Because I have a specific food allergy, my food needs to be prepared specially. The team took care of everything and presented me with delicious meals that allowed me to savour the cuisine without experiencing any side effects. The breakfast was included, and they also had some fantastic vegetarian meal options, made with fresh, local ingredients.
Sustainability
This lodge cares about giving back to local communities. They are committed to a literacy programme for Grade 3 learners from the local primary schools Phakamisani and Kwanokuthula. Tsala staff members offer their time to support this programme, which involves reading, writing, and having conversations with the learners. This results in the children acquiring the essential literacy skills they need to proceed to the next level of their primary school education when they are no longer taught in their home language isiXhosa but in English.
