Namibia Essentials: What to Pack for Your Trip

Written by Daryll Williams

Packing is an important part of any holiday - and none more so than a trip to Namibia. There’s open-air game drives, bush walks, and mountain hikes to think about, as well as swimming pools and soaring desert temperatures. And, of course, it’s all got to fit into a tiny bag of luggage. So, here’s our list of hints and tips for what to pack for Namibia, plus a few bits and pieces we would’ve loved to have known for our first trip to Namibia.

Clothes

As a general guide, comfortable, and casual clothing that you can wash and wear is recommended while on safari. Muted colours are best for game viewing. Game drives are generally conducted in the early morning and the late afternoon, which can be cold, especially in winter. The temperature often warms up during the day, so it is best to dress in layers.

The most practical items to pack for your Namibia safari are:

  • Clothes in khaki, green, beige, and neutral colours

  • Long-sleeved shirts that offer protection from the sun and mosquitoes

  • T-shirts

  • Shorts or a light skirt

  • Jeans or safari trousers for evenings and cooler days

  • Jackets and sweaters for early morning and late afternoon game drives

  • A lightweight waterproof jacket in case of rain

  • Swim and beachwear

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, moisturiser and lip salve

  • Binoculars and camera equipment

The luggage allowance on small flights is usually limited to a maximum of 20 kg, which includes hand luggage, so please bear this in mind when packing. Most lodges and camps provide a same-day laundry service for your clothes.

Shoes

Whether you’re scampering up dunes in Sossusvlei, hiking rocky canyons on the hunt for Bushmen art, or traversing the plains when following a rhino, comfortable closed-toe boots or walking shoes are a must. Plus, they’ll keep your toes warm on chilly evenings and protect you from the mosquitoes.

However, if you just plan on doing some casual walking through the city streets of Windhoek, then lightweight walking shoes or trainers are fine.

Gadgets

Namibia is a photographer’s dream, and, even if you don’t consider yourself a professional, we dare you to try not to flash your camera at the immense landscapes. Many of the camps however, have very basic charging facilities and having a spare battery or two for your camera will put your mind at ease and ensure you don’t miss out on that star shot. And while we’re on the subject, pack some extra memory cards too.

Health and safety

Both Windhoek and Swakopmund, as well as other large towns and cities, have excellent and well-stocked pharmacies. But in a country as vast as Namibia, you could find yourself quite a distance from an urban establishment. Be prepared and add a small medical kit with painkillers, insect repellent, antiseptic wipes, plasters, and anything else you regularly take to your bag.
