In a world where the future can sometimes feel uncertain, it is increasingly important to have clear and actionable plans to meaningfully contribute to environmental protection. 1% for the Planet is a groundbreaking organisation that partners with different sustainable companies and individuals across the globe.
Viatu is proud to announce that we have registered as members of 1% for the Planet so that we can start to carve away a more sustainable future for travel and, as a result, help conserve the beautiful destinations that we offer and uplift those who live in them.
Started by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, in 2002, 1% for the Planet has streamlined the process by which meaningful financial contributions can be made. The organisation directs 1% of their members' and partners' earnings to pre-cleared and certified environmental partners.
1% for the Planet’s impact is directed at addressing the following areas 6 core areas:
Climate
Some great initiatives in this area include investing in renewable energy like solar, education initiatives for adults and young people, conserving natural resources, and climate activism.
Food
Along with educational initiatives, some other approaches focus on food security, organic agriculture and sustainable fishing.
Land
With a focus on conserving wild, rural and urban land, some other key initiatives include education, law, and policy.
Pollution
1% for the planet tackles pollution in a few different ways, ranging from cleanups to recycling and addressing the quality of resources such as water and soil.
Water
From a drought mitigation focus to ocean conservation and cleanup, 1% for the planet has various initiatives to address water stress.
Wildlife
From land-based to water-based conservation efforts, as well as wildlife research and education, these are a few incredible and valuable initiatives that focus on wildlife.
Many of the core focuses of 1% for the Planet’s environmental impact plan aligns with our mission at Viatu. Through the destinations we sell, those we partner with, the impact of our travellers and our internal operations, we are proud to take another step towards not only keeping wild places wild but being a part of a global organisation that is determined to protect all precious spaces on this earth.
